North Springs Goes All Out for STEM Event [Photos]

Ga Tech student and 2010 NSCHS grad Marc Powell explains his research project to SSEF Vice Chair Melanie Noble-Couchman. Powell is a biomedical engineering major whose poster presentation won first place for Tech's School of Engineering.
Sandy Springs resident and honored guest Dr. Marlene Macleish accepted her award on behalf of her grandson preschooler Isiah Everett White. Congratulating Dr. Macleish is Tracy Gray, President/CEO of Gray & Associates, with his granddaughter Tahira Ali, a first grader at Woodland Elementary school. Gray's daughter graduated from North Springs
Sandy Springs Education Force (SSEF) Executive Director Irene Schweiger, Fulton County School Superintendent Dr. Robert Avossa, and Julia Bernath, SSEF Board Chair and Fulton County School Board member at the VIP Presentation.
2013 SSEF Event Chair Lorie Lewis, North Springs Assistant Principal Eric Jones and 2013 SSEF STEM honoree Dr. Marlene Macleish, professor of medical education at Morehouse School of Medicine.
Keynote speaker Dr. Tommy Thomas, a neurointensivist at Grady Memorial Hospital and an assistant professor of neurology at Emory University and Palavi Vaidya, a freshman biomedical engineering student at Georgia Tech. Thomas also holds a PhD from MIT and holds an appointment with the Department of Biomedical Engineering at Georgia Tech.

Last week, more than 600 North Springs students in math, science and health science classes attended the third annual STEM kick-off event at North Springs Charter High School.

The event is sponsored by Sandy Springs Education Force in partnership with the Georgia Tech Research Institute.

Emory neurosurgeon Dr. Tommy Thomas shared his life story with students of growing up in rural Alabama, and becoming a medical doctor and an MIT graduate with a Ph.D.

His grandmother, mother and aunt challenged him to strive for greatness and he challenged the students to do the same.

More than 300 guests attended the evening presentation hosted by WXIA-TV education reporter and former North Springs parent Donna Lowry.

Dr. Marlene Macleish, of Morehouse School of Medicine was honored for her work in supporting and initiating the SSEF STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics) programs in Sandy Springs public schools.

Dr. Shean Phelps, former Army Green Beret and distinguished Fellow of the American Academy of Family Physicians, was honored for his role, as Technical Director for Health Systems at Georgia Tech Research Institute, in coordinating the STEM event with SSEF.

Dr. Tommy Thomas presented the keynote address followed by a panel discussion with three Georiga Tech students. Guests also toured the interactive exhibits and talked with students about their research projects.
