Sandy Springs Patch Whiz Kid of the Week

Young playwright Gianna Scerbo featured.

Here’s a look at the accomplishments of this week's Whiz Kid.

Name: Gianna Scerbo
Age: 11
School: Sandy Springs Middle School
Accomplishment: Gianna was the runner-up of the 2010 Young Voices With New Visions "Write A Dream"  Short Play Competition, which highlights plays by kids, about kids and for kids.
Key to Awesomeness: Gianna conceived the idea of writing a stage adaptation of the book, "Number The Stars" by Lois Lowry. According to Pamela Faith-Jackson, founder of the nonprofit Young Voices With New Visions, Inc. and a Woodland Elementary Charter School teacher, Gianna's World War II inspired play titled "STARS" offers a hopeful glimpse into the lives of the book's main characters after the story ends.

Gianna's moving drama premiered at the 2010 Young Voices With New Visions Short Play Festival held at Woodland Elementary Charter School. She successfully completed 10 intensive weeks of new play development.

Her play was directed by Riverwood High School students Casey Rosner and Marva Bagher. Riverwood's theater program director Mary Beth van der Hoek and a group of students heard a reading of Gianna's play, and are now preparing to present a second staging of her play at Riverwood's Black Box Theatre space.
