Five students representing fourth-graders at Holy Innocents' submitted proposals for Sandy Springs new downtown area to the Mayor and City Council, Tuesday.
Sandy Springs has an abundance of parks and green space, but if you go by fourth-graders from Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School, children want even more. During a presentation to Mayor Eva Galambos and City Council members, Tuesday, five students offered proposals on the old Target site as the center of the new downtown area. While the details varied, each student wants a park. The five students represented 80 fourth-graders who visited the site and have brainstormed, since February, on the pressing question of what should the center of Sandy Springs' new downtown look like? The students have picked up now common lingo such as “mixed-use” and “community gathering place.” There was even a hint of a desire for connectivity between shopping …

The Sandy Springs restaurant received two low grades on four visits since early April. After a low 59 on May 4, Ray's received a 91 on May 11.
It’s been a bumpy ride for Ray’s on the River according to recent health inspection reports. Last week, the popular restaurant scored 91 after receiving a low 59 on May 4th. Other recent scores included a 77 on April 9, 2012. However, the health inspector returned two days later and gave the Sandy Springs restaurant a high score of 98. The May 4th report, which yielded the 59 score, says the visit was prompted by a food-borne illness complaint investigation. A few violations referred to food items that were at risk of contamination due to improper storing temperatures, or raw food near ready-to-eat food. Violations during the April 9th visit, which scored 77, included minor mold build-up in the ice machines, a fly trap collector stored …

The manufacturer recalled nine different brands of its dry dog food, including Kirkland Signature Foods.
No pet owner wants to hear the word, "recall." Diamond Pet Foods recently expanded a voluntary recall to include batches of nine brands of dry pet food formulas manufactured between Dec. 9, 2011 and April 7, 2012 due to potential Salmonella contamination. A local reader asked about the recall, so Patch is providing this information from the U.S. Food & Drug Adminstration. You can sign up for recall alerts from the FDA online, or subscribe to an RSS feed. In April 2012, Diamond Pet Foods initiated three voluntary recalls of Diamond manufactured dry dog food. Although none of the additional products being recalled have tested positive for Salmonella, the company is pulling them from store shelves as a precaution. The company stated: “We …

The Sandy Springs restaurant is going to be a popular spot.
When it comes to restaurants in Sandy Springs, there always seems to be new ones coming and going, and in this economy there have been a lot of them going lately. For Mother’s Day, my brother and sister decided to take our parents to one of the new ones - Egg Harbor Café on Roswell Road, in the same shopping center as Caribbean Café and Chipotle, just south of Whole Foods. The location has been home to at least four or five failed restaurants in the past 10 years, but I have a feeling Egg Harbor Café may be exactly what we needed and has hopefully hit on a winning formula. Egg Harbor owners are obviously doing everything they can to put their best foot forward and have coached their employees on the importance of great service. From the…

About 200 Sandy Springs residents attended Tuesday morning and evening sessions with city officials and Goody Clancy, the master planning firm chosen to help create a new downtown.
Sandy Springs residents are chiming in on plans for a new downtown area. During a Tuesday evening session for public feedback on development plans, some folks said they want greenspace and walking areas. Others want building eyesores removed. “I would live to see some change to that backside of [Parkside Shopping Center]; dumpster row.” said Elizabeth Jetton. “It feels like a waste.” Howard Austin wants to see change at City Walk shopping center. “It’s just doesn’t work,” he said. “You’ve got poorly built buildings around the perimeter and you’ve got this big black asphalt in the middle. I’d like to preserve Kroger and the Post Office and J. Christopher’s.” About 200 people attended morning and evening sessions with city officials and …

I took my cat Franjelica of 13 years to the Vernon Woods Animal Hospital.
Our most heartbreaking days can sometimes bring the most tender moments. Just over two weeks ago, I took my cat Franjelica of 13 years to the Vernon Woods Animal Hospital to be euthanized. The quickness of her illness was heartbreaking. In mid-March I noticed a slight protrusion above her nose. I took her to a veterinarian in Stone Mountain, recommended by a friend, who thought it was a bad tooth. During surgery to extract it, they discovered the protrusion was a tumor, likely malignant. Franjelica was always a sweet fragile soul. I knew any kind of radiation or aggressive treatment would be cruel and out of the question. I decided to bring her to Vernon Woods, a vet much closer to home. The doctors told me they had never seen a tumor …
