Children Favor Park Space at Old Target Site (Photos)

Five students representing fourth-graders at Holy Innocents' submitted proposals for Sandy Springs new downtown area to the Mayor and City Council, Tuesday.

Sandy Springs has an abundance of parks and green space, but if you go by fourth-graders from Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School, children want even more. During a presentation to Mayor Eva Galambos and City Council members, Tuesday, five students offered proposals on the old Target site as the center of the new downtown area. While the details varied, each student wants a park. The five students represented 80 fourth-graders who visited the site and have brainstormed, since February, on the pressing question of what should the center of Sandy Springs' new downtown look like? The students have picked up now common lingo such as “mixed-use” and “community gathering place.” There was even a hint of a desire for connectivity between shopping …

Sandy Springs motorists can drive the new alignment at Perimeter Mall Saturday on a golf cart

Wondering how to drive through the "Diverging Diamond" interchange being built at I-285 and Ashford Dunwoody Road? You're in luck. You can give it a test run in a golf cart. On Saturday, The Perimeter Community Improvement Districts will host the test drive from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Perimeter Mall parking lot at Ashford Dunwoody Road and Perimeter Center West. Golf carts will be on hand to be driven on a track that will simulate the new interchange on a "windshield level." All that's needed is a current driver's license. “We want to inform the many employees, residents and visitors to Perimeter who use the I-285 and Ashford Dunwoody interchange about this innovative new design, which shifts the flow of traffic to the opposite side of…

Sandy Springs Commuters: I-285 Interchange to Open June 4

The interchange at I-285 and Ashford Dunwoody Road will be closed for three days prior to the opening of a new alignment that is currently being constructed.

Relief may be coming for Sandy Springs commuters. The reconfigured interchange at Ashford Dunwoody Road and I-285 that's designed to reduce traffic jams is expected to be completed June 4, according to officials with the Perimeter Center Community Improvement Districts. The "diverging diamond" alignment, the first in Georgia, will put cars that are traveling in the right hand lanes into the left lanes of traffic while in the interchange, allowing them to make left turns unimpeded onto I-285. The loop ramp used to access I-285 east from the interchange will be removed. The eastbound ramp is a major contributor to the congestion in the interchange, according to transportation officials. The new alignment is designed to reduce traffic …

Another Lane Closure Likely on Abernathy Road.

The Sandy Springs water main break has been fixed. Another lane closure could happen this week when Atlanta Watershed Management asphalt paves the area.

A water main break has been fixed on Abernathy Road. The break occurred late Monday night on the westbound side of Abernathy Road, about 1,500 feet from the intersection. Another daytime lane closure could occur Wednesday or Thursday when Atlanta Watershed Management paves the affected area. According to the City of Sandy Springs, the break occurred in a mechanical joint that was recently placed by City of Atlanta Watershed Management when they joined a new 12-inch pipe from Roswell Road to the existing main at the location of the break. The joint failed, a statement said. Atlanta had replaced the 1,500 feet of water main to get it out of the way of the Georgia Department of Transportation construction for the Abernathy Road Project.

New Photos: Fourth-Graders Could Inspire Sandy Springs Town Center

Holy Innocents' Episcopal School students have spent months brainstorming ideas for the old Target site and Sandy Springs new downtown plans. They will present their ideas to City Council members on Tuesday.

Fourth-graders from Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School will present their take on Sandy Springs new town center and the former Target site at Tuesday’s City Council meeting. Creative writing teacher Jim Barton explained in an email to Sandy Springs Patch that since February - when City Councilman Chip Collins visited the school  - each student has visited the site, researched similar developments around the area, and put together impressive proposals.  Representing a total of 80 fourth-graders, four students will present an extensive package to Council members. “It’s an impressive package, and the students’ ideas are amazingly imaginative, appropriate and thorough,” Barton said. After visiting the Target site, taking snapshots and …

Appeal Period For Sandy Springs Flood Maps Under Way

FEMA appeals must include an explanation for submitting the petition and a revised study certified by a professional engineer.

The 90-day period has started for property owners to appeal revised flood maps showing their land lies in flood hazard areas. The appeal period started May 4 and ends Aug. 1. The revised maps by the Federal Emergency Management Agency depict special flood hazard areas, floodways and base flood elevations within the City of Sandy Springs, a city announcement said. [In April, City Council members voted to ask FEMA to show areas on new flood maps as Zone X or ‘moderate risk’ instead of  Zone A – ‘high risk.’] FEMA appeals must include an explanation for submitting the petition and a revised study certified by a professional engineer.  When finalized, the proposed elevations will become the basis for floodplain management and regulation …

Sandy Springs Commuters: Ga. 400 Shoulder Lanes Open Monday Morning

It's not expected to be fun driving.

In his View From a Cop column, last week, Sandy Springs Police Captain Steve Rose said there's likely to be a "fender-bender or two" with the opening of new Flex Lanes on Ga. 400, today. Here's what the Georgia Department of Transportation website says to expect: Drivers entering Ga. 400 SB from 6:30 to 9:30 a.m., weekdays, will have two dedicated entrance ramp lanes from Holcomb Bridge. At Northridge, there will be one entrance ramp lane from which drivers will merge as usual into the right thru lane and then move to utilize the right shoulder lane if they choose. This access to the shoulder lanes will be restricted to southbound traffic only in two areas:

Sandy Springs Conservancy: Old Target Site Ideal as a Central Park Space

In a memo to the city, SSC says the site could connect to Heritage Sandy Springs. Sidewalks could link to Abernathy Greenway and Lost Corner.

In a memorandum, last week, to Mayor Eva Galambos, City Council and residents, the Sandy Springs Conservancy echoed what many say they would like to see at the center of the new downtown plan – green space. The SSC envisions the old Target site as a central park space that connects to Heritage Sandy Springs and Williams Payne House, with sidewalks that link to Abernathy Greenway and Lost Corner. The memo from the SSC board of directors said, ”This park could feature large, green lawns, tree-lined walkways, play areas, water features, picnic areas and benches” The letter referred to a growing awareness that parks increase property values: “Parks are now a new measure of community wealth. The overflowing parking lot at Overlook Park shows …

yes, let the park be the central catalyst. all fantastic cities have a central park or string of parks. Roswell',s problem is their central park is not connected to canton street where all the shops and cafes are located. two separate places. no link. very important to have connectivity with extra wide sidewalks, winding pathways, separate bike paths (why not aspire to get designations and awards…   more ›
