Hunton & Williams LLP's Rita A. Sheffey Elected as Secretary of State Bar of Georgia

Hunton & Williams LLP announces Rita A. Sheffey, a partner in its litigation and intellectual property practice, was installed as secretary of the State Bar of Georgia during the organization’s annual meeting. Sheffey was elected by the group’s membership in April and will hold the position with the 44,000-member organization from 2013-2014.

Since 2011, Sheffey has served on the State Bar’s executive committee. She has also represented the Atlanta Circuit on the Board of Governors since 2008. Further, she is vice chair of the State Bar’s General Counsel Overview Committee and a member of the Commission on Continuing Lawyer Competency.

“I am honored that my colleagues selected me for the position,” said Sheffey. “I look forward to continuing to work as part of the State Bar’s leadership team to serve our diverse membership.    Among other things, I hope to increase awareness of the numerous resources the State Bar has available to our members. Also, we need to listen to our members and ensure we remain relevant to them as our profession continues to change and evolve.”

Sheffey spends half her time dedicated to pro bono work and mentoring lawyers at Hunton & Williams. She has served as director of the firm’s Southside Legal Center pro bono clinic since it opened in 1995 and is chair of the pro bono committee for the firm’s Atlanta office.

Additionally, Sheffey served as president of the Atlanta Bar Association from 2011-2012 and was recently awarded the organization’s highest honor, the Charles E. Watkins Jr. Award, for distinguished and sustained service. She is a member of the executive committee of the Metropolitan Bar Caucus, a part of the National Council of Bar Presidents, and president-elect of Emory University School of Law’s Lamar Inn of Court.

Pro Bono Tradition
Hunton & Williams continues to lead the way in community service in the United States, and the firm’s tradition of pro bono service is well recognized. Hunton & Williams, one of only nine firms selected to The National Law Journal’s Pro Bono “Hot List” 2013, continues to devote significant time in serving the community throughout the United States. During the firm’s last four fiscal years, 100 percent of the firm’s full-time US lawyers worked on pro bono projects. The firm maintains three neighborhood offices — in Richmond and Charlottesville, Virginia, and in Atlanta — solely dedicated to pro bono services for low-income individuals and a full-time staffed Pro Bono Fellows program.
