'Yuck' Factor Leads Moms to Invent FreshTape® to Protect Food, Save Money

How Safe Are Those Bag Clips?

ATLANTA, Ga.  – Looking for a better way to keep foods and snacks fresh and sanitary, two moms-turned-entrepreneurs have invented FreshTape®, a new, reusable food bag re-closer.

FreshTape® meets the consumer’s need for a reliable, hygienic, re-sealing method that keeps air and vermin out of bags of food.  This innovative product has been selected for Walmart’s Get On the Shelf contest for outstanding new consumer products, where finalists are determined by online votes.

It was the “yuck factor” that propelled Laura Wilkinson Sinton and Liz Gullum into commercially developing an idea of Gullum’s after Wilkinson Sinton discovered pantry moth eggs and larvae inside the clip on a bag of potato chips in her kitchen.  Unlike bag clips and improvised re-closers such as clothes pins and rubber bands, FreshTape® was designed to meet U.S. Food and Drug Administration safety requirements for sanitary food packaging.

“Everybody uses those bag clips, but they get really germy and gross because no one ever cleans them,” says Wilkinson Sinton. “We keep them around, taking up space and cluttering our kitchen drawers for years.”

The longtime friends knew FreshTape® was a winner when they realized just how consumer packaging has changed over the past 10 years.

“Families buy so many food products in bags today—salads, frozen foods, cookies and candy—that we all need a handy, sanitary way to close bags to prevent spoilage,” says Gullum. “So many of us buy in bulk from warehouse clubs, food can go stale before we can eat it all if it’s improperly sealed.”

FreshTape® saves families money by keeping food fresher longer. According to the Natural Resources Defense Fund (NRDC August 20, 2012), 40 percent of an American household’s food— an average loss of $2,275—is thrown away every year due to spoilage.

FreshTape® is available in six categories of stylish, fun designs ranging from animal prints to retro-1950s chic. Each pack of 18 FreshTapes retails for $9.99 plus shipping and handling. The adhesive strips can be used multiple times, keeping food fresh to the bottom of the bag.
