Komen Funds Continue Free Early Detection Services at Northside Hospital

Sandy Springs women may be eligible to receive financial assistance for mammogram screenings.

Two annual grants from Susan G. Komen for the Cure Atlanta allows eligible women in North Fulton and several other counties to apply for free mammogram services at Northside Hospital.

On Monday, Northside announced more than $189,000 will be dedicated to mammogram screenings and breast diagnostic services at Northside locations and its mobile-mammography unit. Women ages 35 and older, who meet income requirements and have no health insurance may qualify for grant assistance with a note from their doctor.

"Northside Hospital’s breast screening and mammography service projects fill a breast healthcare disparity in the Metro Atlanta area by aiming to eliminate women’s cultural and monetary barriers to receiving breast health care," said Kelly Dolan at Komen Atlanta, in the announcement.

In a 10-year period, Komen has awarded more than $537,000 to Northside Hospital.

Patti Owen, director of oncology services at Northside, said the goal is to increase early detection. "We are grateful to Komen Atlanta for their ongoing commitment to our Breast Care Program," she said.

Lost in the public airing of the funding dispute between Susan G. Komen and Planned Parenthood was Komen's decision to focus on their founding mission of detecting breast cancer early through mammograms and funding research to find a cure. I have no connection to either organization but greatly admire Komen and have been a frequent donor. It seems to me this grant to Northside is exactly the kind of great work they were founded to accomplish and I'm glad to see the Patch is helping to get the word out about the opportunity for mammograms at Northside as a result of the Komen grant.
