Sandy Springs Police Capt. Steve Rose said a Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta social worker notified police on Oct. 5th after the five-month-old boy was brought in by ambulance. He was non-responsive. “He was severely injured either by being shook or severe whiplash,” Rose said. “Something made the child’s brain so injured it caused death.”

Rose said police interviewed Ayala and the infant’s parents. Ayala’s attorney later contacted police saying he would bring her in, instead Ayala fled. Authorities believe she may be in Mexico. Ayala told police she is from both El Salvador and Guatamala. She lived at The Mosaic of Sandy Springs apartments on Roswell Road.

Before the infant died Ayala was wanted for First Degree Cruelty to Children.

Although charges are pending, Rose said Ayala is not presumed guilty. At this point authorities believe she knows what happened. Her husband is also wanted for harboring a felon. The couple is believed to be traveling with their seven-month-old child.
