Inspiring Act3 Musical Nominated for Prestigious Suzy Bass Award

The Sandy Springs playhouse staged the musical in June. Nine high school students, following a workshop with playwright Corey-Jan Albert, wrote the play.

Act3 Productions' first original musical has garnered a Suzi Bass Award nomination - the Gene-Gabriel Moore Playwriting Award - for “By Wheel and By Wing.”

Set in 1941, the story is inspired by the Parnes family’s escape to Russia from the Ukraine during the Holocaust. Nine high school students, following a workshop with playwright Corey-Jan Albert, wrote the play. An anonymous donor helped to fund the production with a $30,000 donation following a stage reading in May 2011.

Mactas hopes to stage the play again in a larger venue with the help of sponsors. The production company is non-profit.

The annual Suzi Bass Awards celebrate outstanding work in metro Atlanta’s professional theater community, along with the artists who produce it. Winners are selected by a panel of judges comprised of arts peers, educators and patrons, along with Suzi members.

The Gene-Gabriel Moore Playwriting Award nominations are determined by a committee of 10 local theater scholars and practitioners who read plays by local playwrights which have been performed in the current season.  The 8th annual Suzi Bass Awards ceremony will take place at 7:30 p.m, Nov. 5 at the Porter Sanford III Performing Arts and Community Center in Decatur.
