Kroger Surpasses Goal to Raise $716K for Breast Cancer Awareness

Sandy Springs stores were among locations that helped the supermarket chain exceed its goal.

Kroger customers and associates throughout metro Atlanta, including Sandy Springs, donated more than $469,000 to Susan G. Komen for the Cure, and more than $247,000 to Kroger’s “Giving Hope a Hand” campaign.

The total amount of $716,000 surpassed the Division’s $450,000 goal, a media statement said. The campaign ran from Oct. 6 – 31, and gave customers the opportunity to purchase pink paper ribbons for $1 at Kroger checkout.

The two-week company-wide sales promotion “Giving Hope a Hand” – in partnership with key suppliers including General Mills and Yoplait – featured hundreds of products at special sale prices.

The supermarket campaign raised $3 million to support local breast cancer initiatives in communities across the country served by the Kroger Family of Stores.

“Thanks to the help of our generous customers and associates, we are one step closer to finding a cure for the thousands of women diagnosed with breast cancer each year,” says Glynn Jenkins, director of communications and public relations for Kroger’s Atlanta Division, in a statement. “We are committed to raising awareness and support for this important cause.”

In addition to the fundraising campaign, 48 Kroger associates from across the U.S. who survived breast cancer were featured on product packages and promotional materials through partnerships with national food companies. Sue Lethgo of Knoxville, Tenn., represented the Atlanta Division.

Annually, thousands of Kroger customers join the fight against breast cancer through various community events and fundraisers. By the end of 2013, Kroger will have donated more than $24 million to support breast cancer research, education and services since 2006.
