A $1.5 billion deal is in the works for the purchase of Sandy Springs-based Air Watch, VMWare a California tech firm.

A year ago, AirWatch announced plans to bring 800 jobs to its Perimeter headquarters through 2015, an investment of $4 million in new equipment. The company designs solutions to simplify mobility, including enterprise-grade mobile device management, mobile application management and mobile content management.

A press release said the Perimeter area site is expected to expand and be the center of VMware’s mobile operations. Founder and CEO John Marshall will continue to lead the AirWatch team, and Alan Dabbiere, AirWatch’s co-founder and chairman, will be overseeing a new AirWatch operating board, the statement said.

“When we started AirWatch, we set out to help businesses succeed in the mobile explosion that was set to come. Now there are more than 2 billion smart phones and tablets in the world and more than half of those devices touch an enterprise,” said Alan Dabbiere, co-founder and chairman, AirWatch, in the release. “By joining a proven innovator like VMware, we now have an opportunity to bring our leading-edge solutions to an even broader set of customers and partners to help them optimize for the mobile-cloud world.”

Last year, Gov. Nathan Deal commented on AirWatch, “Our rapidly accelerating base of knowledge workers not only attracts new industry, but encourages Georgia-grown companies such as AirWatch to commit to staying and expanding here. This decision moves Georgia closer to becoming the No. 1 place in the nation to do business,” he said.
