Provisional Ballots in Question at District 6 Precinct on Election Day

Some Sandy Springs voters in District 6 said they were given the wrong ballot and had to vote for District 5 candidates or not at all. No provisional ballots were provided, they said.

On Election Day, Patch reported that District 6 voters at the Church of Atonement precinct were given District 5 ballots, and basically discovered that they could either vote for a District 5 candidate or not vote at all.

Patch learned from voters and District 6 candidate Patty Berkovitz that no provisional ballots were provided when requested.

But, a statement to Fulton County to CBS Atlanta News, Tuesday, said in part: “The poll manager has stated no voters were denied a provisional ballot.”

On Election Day, frustrated voters told Patch that they cast their vote for a District 5 candidate when no provisional ballot was provided. Later in the day when the problem was resolved, they returned to the polls believing, from Fulton County, they could vote again in the correct District.

That was not the case, however.

“There is no way to cancel an electronic vote,” said Dwight Brower, Fulton County Elections Chief, on Tuesday. “It’s for those people that did not vote. They can have a ballot created on the machine that will reflect their proper District 6. There is no remedy for people who have already cast their ballot.”

Brower said he was not aware that provisional ballots were not at the precinct.

Sandy Springs spokesperson Sharon Kraun told Patch that Michael Casey, the city clerk, is looking into the question. Kraun said that before Election Day, “We asked [Fulton County] for each polling place to have, I think, 100 provisional ballots, at every precinct.”
