Blue & Gray Saturday -- Free Civil War event

Carry the guns and sing the songs of war as you experience
Sandy Springs history for yourself. Our community played an important role in
the conflict and Heritage Sandy Springs will commemorate the Sesquicentennial
of the Civil War through exhibits, lectures and the hands-on, family program
Blue & Gray Saturdays.

In the summer of 1864 the small farming community of Sandy
Springs was overtaken by more than 100,000 Federal soldiers. Some welcomed
their arrival and took refuge behind the lines while most tried to simply
survive by saving what food they could from the hungry troops. Regardless of
their political ideals or social position, everyone who lived through those
hard days were marked by events that swept through our community.

After 150 years the American Civil War remains one of the
most defining events in our nation’s history. Sandy Springs and the Civil War exhibit at the Heritage Sandy Springs Museum gives a more personal understanding
of the everyday realities of life on the home front. Unique letters,
photographs and artifacts, many of which have never been on display, are now
available for the public to view

“Every anniversary is an opportunity to reflect,” says
Curator Kimberly Brigance. “The war ended 150 years ago, but it still
reverberates with us today.  Only part of
our community remained after the war and those are the people that laid the
foundation for what our city is today. How do we take that collective memory
into the future?”

In conjunction with the exhibit, families and children of
all ages are invited to join in the action and drama of the sesquicentennial through
a variety of free crafts and demonstrations led by experienced and
knowledgeable reenactors.
