You Can't Plan for Everything

Today was a perfect example where external influences forced me to have to change the date of a class. When I laid my class calendar out for the year, I took holidays and school schedules into account where I could. What you can never take into account is the weather and some strange million to 1 chance of something. But you can take precautions and have backups in place just in case something happens.

Let’s start with this… Social Media is HUGE! Facebook being the daddy of them all when it comes to traffic and the sheer amount of people using it. So what happens when Facebook decides to shut down, well that is unlikely to happen any time soon. So let’s talk about something a little more plausible. Let’s say tomorrow you go to look at your Facebook business page and suddenly you can’t get to it. Or you notice that you can no longer post links to your website. I am sure you would have a confused look on your face wondering why there was no warning.

What are you going to do?

First you are probably going to go from confused to angry then on to panicky… How are you going to let people know what is going on? How do you have access to all of your clients or followers? If Facebook is your main source of traffic and how you communicate with people what will you do?

So you think you can get around Facebook by creating a new page, well during the process you get a message saying that you can’t sign up for blah blah blah reasons, usually with some reference to the Terms of Service. Welcome to a nightmare for business owners and this happens more than is talked about. You can try and reach out to FB, but you will find that they are less than helpful.

What did you do wrong? Sometimes nothing… Sometimes it was something you didn’t realize was even going on. A virus on your website that Facebook saw when it was referring someone to your site will shut you down for good. You can violate the Terms of Service by being a part of an MLM network, as that is in violation of the TOS.

What can you do to prevent or to circumvent this from happening?

Let’s be honest, you haven’t and don’t want to read the TOS. You just want to run your business and post stuff on Facebook. But what happens if all of the Social Networks shut down tomorrow? Well if you have created an inviting enough website, people will probably still go to it. If you have created an email list of most of the people from social media and of your current clients, then you are golden. It won’t matter if they shut them all down. You will still have a list of all your clients and prospects.

What else can you do?

Create a 2nd profile as a backup with no links going from it, nor have it used in any promotions. This way if your main page drops out, you have a second page as a backup.

But what if it is your website and not your pages? Well my suggestion is that you have a backup domain that you can utilize and can move a replica of your website over to. At least during the move if it was a virus then you should have a web designer wise enough to catch the problem.

Now I know that I reference Facebook a good bit here, but it can be any of the social networks that can and have done these types of things. I can move websites the same day and get things back up and running if mine drops out. If my page goes away, well I know how to build things back up via ads, so I am not too worried about my page, currently. Now if I were to have 25k+ followers, then I may rethink that, but for now I am fine.

You can’t plan for the weather and you can’t plan for outages, but you can have a plan in place in case of a disaster. If you need help with a plan, feel free to reach out to me and we can put one together for you.

We will be discussing disaster plans in the class that I had to move. So if you want a free way to figure this out, then this will be a great way to get it! In the process of moving the class date, I went ahead and opened up a few more seats for the class.
