Local Knitters Support Cancer Patients at Northside Hospital

The Sandy Springs Society knitters recently presented Northside Hospital’s Cancer Institute with more than 100 caps for cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy treatment.

As a regional and national leader in cancer care, Northside diagnoses and treats more cases of cancer than any other hospital in Georgia.  Many patients require chemotherapy as part of their care.  Caps help to ease the cold and other side effects that patients often experience during treatment, providing comfort as they sit for long hours.

“We love having the community support our patients, and their creations are truly works of art,” said Judy Lewis, special projects chairperson, Northside Hospital Auxiliary.  Lewis coordinates with community and hospital-based volunteers to create handmade items for Northside’s patients in the Cancer Institute, Special Care Nursery, Perinatal Bereavement and other departments.  “We are excited to share these beautiful caps with our patients.”

Organized in January 2013, the Sandy Springs Society knitters are part of The Sandy Springs Society, a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization.  With more than 20 members, the knitters came together because they all wanted to give back to the community.  For many years, Northside Hospital has been a big supporter of The Sandy Springs Society.  At the knitting group’s first meeting, members decided to knit chemo caps for the hospital’s cancer patients as a special way for The Society to give back to Northside.

“The Sandy Springs Society celebrates its 25th year of service to the community of Sandy Springs and this project is just a small way we are making a difference,” said Kate Dalba, president, The Sandy Springs Society.  “It has been a very rewarding project and The Society knitters may start a new project of knitting baby blankets for the maternity ward.”
