Car chase, crash block I-285 East

Sandy Springs police dog catches burglary suspect who fled into woods.

Sandy Springs police arrested an armed robbery suspect Friday afternoon after a police chase and a wreck that blocked several lanes of I-285 East.

Steve Rose, spokesman for Sandy Springs police, said Atlanta police were on the lookout for a car connected to a residential burglary in Atlanta’s Zone 2. A shotgun or rifle was reportedly taken in the burglary, Rose said.

Atlanta police saw a car that matched the description  and started chasing it, Rose said. The car went north on Ga. 400 and exited onto I-285 East, he said. The driver lost control near the Peachtree-Dunwoody exit and the car spun around and was struck broadside by an oncoming vehicle on I-285. The accident happened at about 2 p.m.

One man in the car fled on foot into the nearby woods. Police searched for about 25 minutes until a Sandy Springs police dog apprehended the suspect near Lake Hearn Drive and Peachtree-Dunwoody Road. That suspect was treated for dog bites, Rose said. The other man in the car was injured in the crash and taken to Grady Hospital, Rose said. His condition was not known Friday afternoon.

The suspects’ names were not available Friday afternoon. The driver of the other vehicle didn’t appear to be injured, Rose said.

Rose said police didn’t find a shotgun or rifle but did uncover evidence of a burglary. Sandy Springs will investigate to see if the suspects have been involved in any burglaries in the city, he said.

Sandy Springs may file traffic charges, Rose said. Atlanta will prosecute the burglary.
