A Roswell man was indicted this week by a Clarke County Grand Jury on felony charges after he crashed his Jeep into a utility pole and injured two passengers.

According to a story in the Athens Banner Herald, Camilo Gomez, 19, was under the influence of marijuana when he crashed his Jeep early on Aug. 25, the indictment says.

Gomez told police that he swerved to avoid hitting a squirrel on Oconee Street and crashed in front of the UGA Police Department, the story says. One of the passengers, a 17-year-old girl, had a broken ankle and the other 17-year-old suffered broken facial bones and some lost teeth, police said.

The story says that Gomez told police he had smoked marijuana and had had a beer before heading down Oconee Street. One passenger told police that Gomez also had taken some kind of pill.

The grand jury on Tuesday charged Gomez with two felony counts of causing serious injury by vehicle, driving under the influence of drugs and failure to maintain lane.
