Police Department's Popular Women's Self-Defense Class Returns

Women take the Sandy Springs Police self-defense class for a variety of reasons.

Sandy Springs Police self-defense classes for women are back in session.

During the two-hour class, instructors demonstrate simple movements that can ward off attackers.

Women have taken the popular class for a variety of reasons. , a participant said she was partly motivated to take the class after her friend was carjacked in Atlanta's Virginia-Highland neighborhood. Another person took the class after co-workers warned her about walking in the parking deck during off hours, while talking on the phone.

The free classes are held 6-8 p.m., one Thursday per month. Currently there is a waiting list. If you are interested in signing up, email Police Officer Larry Jacobs, Sandy Springs Crime Prevention Specialist at LJacobs@sandyspringsga.gov.

The attached video shows a self-defense move demonstrated during a class in 2011.

Ladies - Join us for a free 2 hour self defense class designed for women 18 years of age and older. The class is held on one Thursday a month, from 6-8 pm at the SSPD and is FREE. The date changes from month to month. We just conducted our 37th straight class which is taught by several of SSPD's finest defensive tactics instructors. The first half of the class is a Power Point designed to get you in the right "mindset" and teaches you how to be safer at home, work and out and about. The second half is when you are taught some very easy to do and remember physical responses with names such as "the Dracula" and "brush the hair." Classes are forming now and you don't have to be a resident of Sandy Springs to attend. Contact Officer Larry Jacobs, ljacobs@sandyspringsga.gov, to be placed on the waiting list.
