Secret Shopper Scam
A woman at 4586 Roswell Road reported on March 9 that she responded to an Internet “Secret Shopper” deal from a company called COMSCORE, INC. They would send her a check for $1,995 and she was to:
a. Cash the check
b. Keep $350 for herself
c. Send the rest on to another (out of town) address
She cashed the check and then decided to keep $1,000 instead of $350. The bank later contacted her and said the original check was fraudulent and she needed to return the money.
Secret Shopper scams usually surface by the dozens during the Thanksgiving and Christmas Holiday season but the hook is always the same. They send a check and you cash and keep some, and send the rest on. They hope that you will do this in a timely manner so that when the fraud becomes apparent, you will have already sent the cash. This M.O. is also common on employment opportunities. ANY TIME that you’re asked to cash and check, take some, and send the rest on, it’s a scam.
