Update: Construction Co. Prepares to Demolish Former Target

The former Target is coming down for the Sandy Springs' City Center. Near term plans for the space includes five uses: A residential structure, retail space, office space, a civic building, and a parking structure.

Clarification: The parking lot entrance at the former Target will be closed at the southwest corner of Sandy Springs Circle. The road will not be closed.

Next week, Alternative Construction and Environment Solutions company will place fencing around the former Target building in preparation for the Jan. 6, 2014 demolition.

The Good Will facility will not be torn down as part of this phase, an announcement said. However there will be no commuter traffic on that stretch of Mount Vernon Highway. The southwest side [of the parking lot] on Sandy Springs Circle will be closed permanently.

“The community worked hard in helping us develop the City’s Master Plan for the downtown area, and it is exciting to see progress happening,” said Mayor Eva Galambos in a statement. “While there is still much work to be done, replacing the deteriorating building with green space helps signify the new growth we expect to see in the City Center area.”

A master developer could deviate from that preliminary plan, explained Sandy Springs spokesperson Sharon Kraun, if their expertise suggests something different.

The city is still in the request for qualifications process from potential developers, Kraun said.
