The Sandy Springs mayor retires after serving two terms. Her term officially expires on Jan. 7, 2014, and Mayor-elect Rusty Paul takes over.

Praise was bestowed upon Sandy Springs’ first Mayor Eva Galambos, Tuesday, for her final City Council meeting.

Galambos retires after serving two terms. Her term officially expires on Jan. 7, 2014, and Mayor-elect Rusty Paul takes over.

Councilman Tibby DeJulio echoed the sentiments of what many have said, “I met her in 1987 and as I’ve told you life has never been the same.”

Jim Squire, president of the Rotary Club of Sandy Springs and past president David Evans, presented Galambos with the Paul Harris Fellow honor.

“The honor is given in recognition of an individual of extraordinary service rendered to one’s community, state, nation and the world. You certainly exemplify the criteria,” Squire said.

Fulton County Commissioner Robb Pitts stopped by to bid Galambos farewell.

"I was here the first night and I thought it was only fitting that I would be here on the last night to just add my thanks to the great job you’ve done for the City of Sandy Springs, and as a result of that to Fulton County as well,” Pitts said.  “We’re just proud to call you a friend and have had the pleasure of working with you. Thank you so much and Godspeed.”

Galambos thanked Pitts for his help on parks.

“I want to remind everybody that we had some difference of opinions among the commissioners regarding the parks when we first became a city,” she said. “And you were our fourth vote that said you agreed that we had paid for those parks, and you went along and helped us finalize that, so that we’d have the parks. I’ll never forget that. Thank you.”
