How is Your Commute Along Riverside Drive?

Sandy Springs officials are testing a new traffic control system at that intersection dubbed, "Don't Block the Box" at Riverside Drive and Riverside Parkway.

 

Since Friday, Motorists along Riverside Drive and Riverside Parkway see a white box that reads, “Do Not Block.” The intersection was marked to remind drivers to keep the intersection clear as traffic comes to a stop.

"Keeping that ‘box’ open should provide vehicles on Riverside Parkway an opportunity to turn onto Riverside Drive and enter the traffic flow,” said Sandy Springs City Manager John McDonough

In addition to the white box, traffic signs will also be posted as a reminder for drivers along Riverside Drive to keep the marked space open as traffic comes to a stop.

Public Works Director Kevin Walter said, “The opening left on Riverside Drive can then be filled by vehicles turning onto Riverside Drive from Riverside Parkway. Currently, those travelers typically face a long wait as traffic gridlocks.”

The city considered a number of options to help keep traffic moving at that intersection. A combination of factors, including the proximity to Heards Ferry Road and issues with visibility along the Riverside Drive called for an “ouside the box” solution, officials said.
