Sandy Spring’s Traffic Management Center is a simple, yet fascinating, darkly lit room with surrounding camera screens showing intersections at the heart of the city.

When Patch visited, screens displayed traffic along different points of Roswell Road.

Manager Bill Andrews calls traffic monitoring, “Situation awareness.”

You can easily monitor traffic by clicking the Traffic Management Center on the City’s website. Photo images and video streams appear by clicking on streets listed.

Andrews said computer algorithms at the TMC read the number of cars on the road and shifts traffic signals, depending on the flow of traffic.

Maps and spreadsheets also alert staff to traffic problems.

Signals have been known to fail to perform. It could be that signal sensors fail to pick up the car. If you encounter problems, report the issue to the City by calling 770-730-5600.
