The city of Sandy Springs has outlawed smoking and the use of other tobacco products at its parks.

The Sandy Springs City Council during its meeting on Tuesday approved amending its Recreation and Parks smoking ordinance, which prohibits smoking and other tobacco products — including e-cigarettes — at its parks.

“Our parks are public spaces," said Sandy Springs Mayor Rusty Paul. "Everyone, in particular our children, should have the opportunity to enjoy these outdoor, natural areas without worry of taking in second-hand smoke."

The ordinance prohibits the use of cigarettes, cigars, pipes, e-cigarettes, smokeless tobacco and roll-your-own tobacco products. The new rules go into effect immediately.

Tell us: What are your thoughts on the Sandy Springs City Council's decision to ban smoking and other forms of tobacco in its parks?

Another non-smoker who thinks the ban on e-cigarettes is terrible. How many e-cigarettes and vapor smaokers are ex-cigarette users who are trying to stop by using this product and will no longer be able to enjoy these parks.

Lol oh the old 'what about the children' line used to steal more freedoms from adults! Funny that you claim "Everyone, in particular our children, should have the opportunity to enjoy these outdoor, natural areas without worry of taking in second-hand smoke" but you added SMOKELESS tobacco & E ciggs into your ban! Thus it is NOT about saving the kids from smoke, it is about STEALING FREEDOMS, nothing more. Get a life Sandy, you have a lot more to worry about in your city than this!

I don't agree with banning the smokeless products, but I hate to go someplace to enjoy the great outdoors and have someone blowing smoke my way. At the beach recently we rented chairs and an umbrella. The people on both sides of us were smokers and we had to endure the smell of their cigarettes instead of enjoying the fresh air of the beach. Smokers should be more considerate and realize we don't all enjoy their habit! Way to go Sandy Springs!!!!

I wholeheartedly support Sandy Springs decision to ban all tobacco products from their parks, including e-cigarettes. E-cigarettes are a drug delivery device. They contain nicotine (a drug) which is derived largely from tobacco which makes it a tobacco product. The jury is still out on what other harm it presents to our society, and the fact that it is glamorized on TV and other media advertising just sends a message to our youth that smoking is cool. It's Joe Camel all over again. I agree e-Cigarettes need to be nipped in the bud. BTW, kids are using e-Cigarette cartridges to smoke other "street" drugs. Most restaurants are banning e-Cigarettes as well. I think it's important for officials to do what's best for the safety and security of their constituents. I pity those who can't see the merits of this new ordinance in Sandy Springs. And it will become the norm all over and I say it's about time.
