The City of Sandy Springs will host a community celebration to honor the legacy of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at 10 a.m., Monday, in the Sandy Springs City Hall Council Chamber.

During the celebration event, the 2013 Humanitarian Award will be presented honoring an individual who has shown outstanding commitment to community service in Sandy Springs.

“As we take this day to reflect on the values and charge led by Reverend King, it is appropriate that we recognize someone in the community who actively demonstrates that philosophy,” said Sandy Springs Mayor Eva Galambos.

The 2012 recipient was Tamara Carrera, chosen in part, for her leadership of the Community Assistance Center which works to prevent homelessness, hunger reduction and promotes self-reliance for those in need.

Rodney Bullard, executive director of the Chick-fil-A Foundation will be this year’s keynote speaker. Bullard oversees the corporate philanthropic strategy for Atlanta-based Chick-fil-A.

Bullard served in the U.S. Air Force Judge Advocate General Corps, including time working at the Pentagon as a Congressional Legislative Liaison in the Office of the Secretary of the Air Force.

Music for the event will be provided by choir students with Spalding Charter Elementary School and a special appearance by Michael Night, the “New York Cowboy.” Born and raised in New York, Night has a long-standing love of country music. His style of music has been called “Country Music with a New York ‘flavor’ and a dash of ‘gospel.’” Night will perform two songs he has written: “I have a Dream” and “Free at Last.”

Sandy Springs City Hall is located at 7840 Roswell Road. The event will be held in Building 500.
