View From a Cop: Steve Rose Muses on Resolutions, Saggy Pants and More

A whole generation of boys is growing up with the misconception that walking around with their pants sagging down to their knees is a cool thing.

Hopefully you have survived the holidays and like me, you are looking forward to credit card payment support group meetings each month.

Once again it is time to make the resolutions that will soon fade from your list of priorities. Most resolutions are designed to fail since we make them out of guilt and not so much from common sense. “I vow to lose 75 pounds before the summer!” Come on. Be realistic and set reasonable goals. Take one of those numbers, either one, and make that the resolution. You may then actually reach it.

My vow this year is to not open my 401-K statement letter. It has only brought me heartache. I plan to move to denial this year to see if I’m more comfortable there.

Something else that is just around the corner is the new legislative session at the Gold Dome. Lawmakers will gather and push individual legislative causes, hopefully to be signed into law. I know several state legislators personally and know for a fact that you have to be dedicated to spend three or more months out of the year at the Capitol and not at your job.

I considered running for state office once and actually put together a political action committee or PAC, to get some feedback on if or not it was worth pursuing. At the first meeting they laughed, looked around, and asked: “Where’s the camera?” Apparently I wasn’t very good at selecting a PAC.

I’ve spent over 35 years applying criminal law to bad people. There are laws that are good, solid laws and some that we probably wouldn’t miss. If there is anything that I would like to contribute to, it would be a successful lobbying effort to bring an end to one of the most devastating negative trends affecting our youth today. I’m not talking about drugs—we all know that already. I’m talking about a whole generation of boys growing up with the misconception that walking around with their pants sagging down to their knees is a cool thing.

Cool is necessary for kids. I understand that but how can we as adults, not admit we have failed our kids when we see them walking out of the house as if they suffered a head injury while getting dressed.

How did this start?

Who said: “You know, how cool would it be if our pants were so low that the crotch of our pants would drag on the floor and we would limit ourselves by tying up one hand holding our pants up and handicap any effort of effectively running away from something like a fire for instance because our feet would tangle and we’d fall flat on our faces?”

The only advantage for us in law enforcement is that those criminals who adopt the “sag” are easier to catch as they flee. That’s it. Nothing more so perhaps we need some legislators to step up and introduce some tough laws on sagging.

You’re saying: “Steve, you idiot. This is fashion, not something that government should get into.”

Yeah, well let’s up the stakes and include improper spandex fashion. If that doesn’t bring you over to my side, nothing will save you. You and I both know that being exposed to the sight of someone well over the weight limit for proper spandex display scares us. Seriously.

We either stop it now or we stand to lose our grip on humanity. Let us legislate for the right reasons and this one is right!  If we don’t stand up and fight, it will only get worse.  You don’t think so?

Today it’s sagging pants and over-packed spandex. How can it get worse?

We take a stand now or we risk the return of - disco.
