Fast Facts on Fulton County Schools

A few hard numbers on the school system. Superintendent Robert Avossa recently said that Sandy Springs schools have growing enrollment.

 

During a recent visit to Sandy Springs, Fulton County Schools superintendent provided some fact facts and background on the school system.

  • Sandy Springs is one of the fastest growing areas this year in projected enrollment.
  • Nearly 95,000 students are enrolled in 100 Fulton County Schools.
  • The average cost per student is about $9,500.  Cobb and Gwinnett Counties average about $8,800 per child, and Atlanta Public Schools average about $15,000 per student.  [The superintendent noted that some students in Fulton County may cost as much as $40,000 to educate.]
  • More than 40 percent of students are on free or reduced priced lunch.
  • While 50 percent of African American males graduate in Georgia, in Fulton County it’s about 71 percent, Avossa estimates. The graduation rate for black males from poor families is below 50 percent in the county.
  • At the start of the school year, the student racial make-up was 42 percent black, 34 percent white, 12 percent Hispanic, 9 percent Asian, 3 percent multi-racial, and less than one percent Native American. [Provided by Fulton County Schools.]
  • The annual school budget is about $850 million. There are nearly 15,000 employees.
