Fulton Board Member Named a Friend of Music Education

A Fulton County School Board member has been recognized for her passion for music.

Julia Bernath recently received the Friend of Music Education award from the Georgia Music Educators Association.  

The award, given on an annual basis, recognizes a person who has made tremendous contributions to music education through his or her's support and encouragement. 

“Mrs. Bernath has provided the Georgia Music Educators Association with valuable input on the decisions we make concerning our student and teacher events,” said Cecil Wilder, GMEA executive director. “She is well known in our organization and throughout the state for her dedication and commitment to music education.”

Bernath has been a GEMA board member for the past six years. She's used her capacity to promote "benefits of music education and been a supporter of music teachers and students," the district said. 

While serving as a school board member, the district notes Bernath has championed Georgia music programs by advocating for high quality music instruction. 

“This award means everything to me. I appreciate and understand the value that music education brings to our students and how it enhances school life, as well as life beyond school,” said Bernath, who represents district 7 of the school board. “Music is a lifelong tool in creating a well-rounded student.” 

Bernath is a former violinist and has instilled her love of music in her family. Her three children played instruments in their school orchestras. 

“I believe that the arts are as essential to our students’ education as the three R’s,” said Superintendent Robert Avossa. “We support efforts to nurture the whole child, and Mrs. Bernath’s passion for music education brings that voice to our school board.”
