Holy Innocents' Girls Edge Chattahoochee, Clinch Berth in Lacrosse State Championship

Lady Bears win 10-9, play at Westminster Saturday for the crown

Following a deep playoff run with a trip to the Final Four last season, girls' lacrosse took the field in 2011 looking to improve upon their performance and claim a state title.

So far, so good for the Lady Bears after edging out host-club Chattahoochee 10-9, Wednesday, to advance to the state championship game.

The win sets up a title showdown on Saturday, where the Lady Bears will travel to Westminster for lacrosse bragging rights in Georgia.

“Our girls fought for every inch and poured their hearts into it,” said head coach Forrest Stillwell. “I’m so proud of this team.”

The Lady Bears (17-3) jumped out to a 2-0 lead; however, Chattahoochee fought back and held on to a lead throughout the majority of the game.

Late in the contest with the score tied at 9-9, Bailey McDearis received a pass from Arden Birdwell and fired the ball to the back of the net for the game-winning goal with 15 seconds on the clock.

Birdwell and Kat Conway both led with three goals each. McDearis scored twice while Mary Hollis Schmidt and Sarah Venable netted one goal respectively. Birdwell and Nicole Farmer were solid on draw control while defensively; Stewart, Farmer and Lowe held the opposition in check.

Recently, three Lady Bears received postseason honors for the skills on the field led by Birdwell, who was named First Team All State. Nicole  Farmer and McDearis have earned Second Team honors.
