Holy Innocents' Girls Softball Team Looking Strong

The Bears look to keep the momentum after Labor Day.

The Holy Innocents' girls softball team evened its region record at 1-1 on Thursday afternoon, shellacking Landmark Christian 9-1 in six innings. The Bears look to keep the momentum after Labor Day when their conference schedule continues, as they will face Paideia and Strong Rock Christian next week.

“This was a great way to overcome adversity with our star pitcher being out,” Coach Dan Healy said. “If I had two games balls, I would give one of them to Atia Williams and the other to Brantley Taylor.”

Williams took over on the mound for the injured Ansley McGhee, who will be out until at least Sept. 10th with a sore shoulder. Williams allowed only three hits in the six innings, walked only two and struck out five. “She just pitched a great game,” Healy added.

As for Taylor, the senior went 3-for-4 at the plate with a run scored and three RBI, while making two great catches from her centerfield position running in towards home.

Healy’s bunch scored a run in the first, four in the second, three in the fifth and the game clincher in the sixth. Besides Taylor’s bat production, Ciel Rodriguez was 2-for-3 with two runs scored and two batted in and Carter Basham also went 2-for-3 with a run scored and a double.

Rebecca Maitski, Brittany Rottner, Caroline Cotton and Madison Miller also collected hits. Maitski drove in two runs on the day.

Perhaps the only negative was an injury to second baseman Hannah Been. The sophomore collided with Taylor in shallow centerfield, causing her to leave the game in the middle innings.

Looking to this week, Healy’s bunch travels to Paideia Tuesday before heading to region-leading Strong Rock Thursday. Both games are at 5 p.m.
