Lower School students at , in Sandy Springs gathered with song and prayer on Veterans Day Friday to learn about veterans and their service.

A color guard of Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts and League Cadet members presented the American flag, while Kevin Whelan, a veteran and Holy Spirit father, was recognized, according to the school.

Whelan, who served four years as a U.S. Army officer, spoke to the students on the topic of “If you want to honor a veteran, then serve others."

Drawing upon the relationship with the school’s official motto, Ministrāre non ministrārī — To Serve, Not to Be Served, Whelan said, “Veterans are honored for ‘service’...each time a student seeks to serve rather than to be served. If they are able to do this they are serving side-by-side with our soldiers.”
