North Springs, Holy Innocents' Students Honored as Top Athletes of the Month

Mary Hollis Schmidt, a senior volleyball player from Holy Innocents' Episcopal School and Tyler Reid, a junior football player from North Springs Charter High School were named Student-Athletes of the Month.

The Greater North Fulton Chamber of Commerce and XL212 sports management and marketing agency have named Mary Hollis Schmidt, a senior volleyball player from Holy Innocents’ Episcopal School as Female Student Athlete of the Month; and Tyler Reid, a junior football player from North Springs Charter High School as Male Student-Athlete of the Month. 

The award recognizes the outstanding accomplishments of deserving student-athletes in the greater North Fulton area, a press statement said.

In volleyball, Schmidt, started at the libero position in 119 sets and recorded 48 aces with 447 digs and helped lead the Golden Bears Girls Volleyball team to their first ever GHSA State Championship. She was named to the All Area 5A Team and All State this year as well as serving as Varsity Team Captain the last three years.  In addition to four seasons of varsity volleyball, she has played three seasons of basketball and two seasons of lacrosse.

She has a 3.8 GPA and is part of a rigorous interdisciplinary curriculum of Holy Innocents’ program for Global Citizenship. She has spent time in both Fiji and sub-Saharan Africa serving less fortunate children. Her teacher Quinton Walker said, “She is a deep thinker who understands both perspective and empathy, a truly gifted student.”

Her Coach Taylor Noland described Schmidt as hard working, determined, and a leader. "...She will be irreplaceable in this program," he said.

Tyler Reid

In his one year as a quarterback and team captain, Reid, completed 160 passes for 2090 yards with 15 touchdowns while setting the school record for passing yards in a single season. He also had 150 yards rushing and two touchdowns. He is also a standout baseball player.

In the classroom, he maintains a 4.0 GPA and has been a Super Honor Roll Student since 2011. Reid is a Duke TIP Scholar and North Springs VIP.

His other extra curricular activities include being a member of National Honor Society, FBLA, Junior Achievement, Fellowship of Christian Athletes, Interact Club and was a member of group that made 300,000 meals for children in Latin America.  

He is an Amy's Holiday Party Volunteer selling pumpkins and trees for Dunwoody United Methodist Church. He runs his own business helping people with tech problems and electronics.

Coach Steve Horton said “He is an incredibly intelligent young man who works hard on and off the field; a leader in our community, our campus and our sports teams. He is a joy to coach.”
