North Springs Tennis Team Finishes No. 2 in State

The Sandy Springs high school team made their first trip to the state finals in 19 years.

 

The North Springs Tennis Spartans finished no. 2 in the Georgia High School Association Tennis State Championship, on Saturday.

After an exciting journey to the championship round, the Spartans lost to defending state champions, Woodward Academy, at Clayton County International Tennis Park.

The Spartans were a third place AAA regional team. It has been more than 30 years since a no. 3 regional team has made it through to finish as one of Georgia's top two high school teams. It was the first trip to the state finals for North Springs’ tennis in 19 years. 

North Springs defeated St. Pius in the quarter-finals of the state tournament to take its place among the elite four in Georgia.

The Spartans defeated region 4's no.1 team, Spalding High School, in a clear cut 3-0 victory for the semi-finals. The win put North Springs in the state finals meeting regional foe Woodward Academy.

In the semi finals Aaron Capitel led the way at #1 singles, 6-1,6-1. The George brothers, senior captain Lloyd and freshman Jordan followed with a win at #1 doubles (6-4, 6-1). At #2 singles, freshman Q Staley won with a 6-1,6-3 victory; leaving  #2 doubles sophomore Elliot Salzberg and freshman Langston Michael up 6-4, 4-2

In the final match the George brothers at #1 doubles won their first set 6-3 while #2 singles Q Staley fought back from a 3-4 deficit to lead the first set 5-4. At #1singles and #2 doubles Capitel, Salzberg, and Michael lost first sets 2-6.  Woodward then took both of those matches while #1 doubles split sets and Staley took the first set in a tiebreaker for the Spartans.   With Staley up 2-1 in the second set and #3 Spartan singles Justin Fleischmann at 2-3 in the first set, North Springs lost #2 doubles 2-6 in the 3rd set.  Woodward took the championship 3-0.

Seniors Aaron Capitel and Lloyd George finish their North Springs careers with 20-2 and 32-12 records respectively.  Capitel has signed with George Mason University and George will be playing for Georgia Perimeter College next year.
