Patch Readers: PETA Request Runs Afoul of University

The animal advocacy group PETA wants Kennesaw State to stop using a live owl as a mascot. University officials say the bird is a source of education for kids and adults.

Patch readers had plenty to say on our story about a demand by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals to discontinue using live animals as school mascots.

And most readers sided with Kennesaw State University, which has been asked by PETA to stop using Sturgis, its live owl mascot. The group says the noise from fans at events is “terrifying” to animals.

The college began using Sturgis -- a Eurasian eagle owl named for its first president, Horace Sturgis -- last fall, reports the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.

Here's a sampling of what Georgia Patch readers had to say on the topic.

Carrie Hollins: "Really? I bet that bird lives better than most. Ridiculous."

Frank Anastasia: "Can we all agree the people associated with PETA are a bunch of annoying loons?"

Brett Frank: "I think we should release people involved with PETA into the wild; they seem to be unable to adapt to civilization, are "terrified" by bright lights and loud noises, and will probably feel more at ease free roaming the countryside. I mean, it's just completely ethically wrong to force people to live in harmony with other people and animals at the same time."

Becca: "PETA = People Eating Tasty Animals :)"

Charles Allen"I am a lifelong member of PETA (People Eating Tasty Animals) and I will never give up my membership!!!"

What do you think? Is it appropriate to use live animals as school mascots? Tell us in comments.

Btw, dogs are domesticated animals but it is still a stressful environment for them. You are comparing apples to oranges and that argument is not valid. If memory serves me, the last UGA died of heart failure quite soon after becoming a mascot. Stress kills. Read up on it.

English bulldogs have high rates of heart problems. That's not stress, it's genetics.

I live in Kennesaw and have two owls living in my woods. They dont like it when I even try to get pics, I can only imagine how terrified the owl "mascot" must be. Dress someone in a mascot costume and quit using Gods beautiful animals as a sick way to entertain people. Phyllis, u just have to ignore those hateful responses, some people are just ignorant.

Exactly--interesting, Patch, how your "sampling" of comments used in the article seems decidely one-sided.

PETA actually DID try to get UGA to eliminate UGA and use a robotic dog. Not thinking that will happen. Phyllis, so you're saying that we shouldn't have dogs as pets? REALLY? What is your suggestion to do with the abundance of dogs in the world? I am seriously asking you. And PETA has been documented with tossing euthanized dogs that they "rescued" into dumpsters, so PLEASE stop glorifying them.
