Patch Readers: PETA Request Runs Afoul of University
The animal advocacy group PETA wants Kennesaw State to stop using a live owl as a mascot. University officials say the bird is a source of education for kids and adults.
Patch readers had plenty to say on our story about a demand by People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals to discontinue using live animals as school mascots.
And most readers sided with Kennesaw State University, which has been asked by PETA to stop using Sturgis, its live owl mascot. The group says the noise from fans at events is “terrifying” to animals.
The college began using Sturgis -- a Eurasian eagle owl named for its first president, Horace Sturgis -- last fall, reports the Atlanta Journal-Constitution.
