Retired Fulton Educators Sought as Mentors

Paid positions are grant funded. Applications close Aug. 15.

Fulton County Schools is looking for its best and most effective retired teachers to come back to serve as mentors to new teachers.

The new teacher mentors will each work with three teachers and guide their development through their first year of teaching students. They’ll help the newcomers learn the ropes of classroom management and how to work collaboratively with other teachers and parents, and also how to effectively teach the new Common Core Georgia Performance Standards to students of multiple learning styles and skill levels.

“A teacher’s first year is one of excitement and big rewards, but it can also be a little intimidating,” said Superintendent Robert Avossa. “The Mentor Program pairs new teachers with experienced, retired educators who can support them and help them make the most of their first year.”

Mentors will meet with each teacher once a week and assist with lesson planning, instructional techniques and classroom management skills. They’ll also help their mentees learn how to use data effectively to gauge students’ progress and development, and then discuss how they can adjust their teaching.

The mentor position is ideal for the retired educator who wants to contribute to teacher and student success, but doesn’t desire a full-time teaching job. Potential mentors must have taught a minimum of three years at either the elementary, middle or high school level, and hold Georgia teaching certification. The grant-funded position is salaried at $3,400 annually, paid in $1,700 installments at the end of each semester.

Interested applicants can apply online and select the “Support Staff” category. The application process closes Aug. 15.
