Fourteen out of 17 Fulton County high schools have been named AP Honor Schools, including two in Sandy Springs.

The honor given by the Georgia Department of Education recognizes high schools "that are leaders in offering students the most challenging curricula available," the Fulton County School System said in a news release.

"Advanced Placement classes give our students a greater opportunity to grow outside of the traditional high school curriculum," said Superintendent Robert Avossa, Ed.D. "This added rigor not only stimulates their learning but helps prepare them for the extensive, fast-paced courses they'll experience in a college environment."

Based upon testing results from the class of 2013, the 2014 awards are placed in five categories: AP STEM Schools, AP STEM Achievement Schools, AP Merit Schools, AP Challenge Schools and AP Access and Support Schools.

Riverwood International Charter School placed in three out of the five categories while North Springs Charter High School was placed in two categories.
