Dear Riverwood Community,

The purpose of this letter is to make you aware of a situation that occurred today at school. It is important that you hear the facts directly from me.

Earlier this afternoon, students noticed two young men, who were not Riverwood students, walking in one of our hallways. Several students came up to an assistant principal and me and told us where the men where located. I called for our school resource officer on the radio and the assistant principal and I went to the location the students had indicated and we found the two men.

The two young men willingly shared information about their visit and claimed to be looking for a student who had “sold their sister a fake ID.” Upon questioning the individuals, we learned that there were two other young men in a car waiting outside of the school. All four of the individuals were questioned by our school resource officer as well as the Sandy Springs Police Department. During a search of the car, marijuana and a BB gun were found.

It’s clear that these individuals should not have been in our school. I am reviewing the school surveillance video as well as questioning staff members to determine how they gained access to our building.

I am very appreciative of the students who reported that these unauthorized individuals were in our school. The most important part of all of our safety protocols is the work we do building relationships with students so they feel comfortable telling us when there are problems. This is a serious situation and I am committed to finding answers. We are reviewing our safety protocols to be sure our environment is safe for all students.

Thank you for your continued support.
