Sandy Springs Schools to Benefit From $224,550 Award for Breakfast Program

Using grant funds, Woodland and Mimosa will offer 'Breakfast in the Classroom,' a program where students pick up a bagged breakfast from the cafeteria and take it to their classroom to eat before the school day begins.

Woodland and Mimosa Elementary, in Sandy Springs and Roswell, are among schools that will directly benefit from a grant for breakfast programs in schools with a high need.

Fulton County Schools will receive more than $224,500 in grant funding from the American Association of School Administrators. Fulton is one of only six school systems in the nation to receive the grants.

Six middle schools – Holcomb Bridge, McNair, Paul D. West, Ridgeview, Sandtown and Woodland Middle – as well as four high schools – Creekside, McClarin, Tri-Cities, and Westlake – will offer ‘Grab-n-Go’ breakfasts. This model allows students to pick up a bagged breakfast from the cafeteria or from portable kiosks located throughout the school. The main goal of the ‘Breakfast in the Classroom’ and ‘Grab-n-Go’ projects is to increase student access to a nutritious breakfast before the start of the school day.

“School breakfast not only supports student health and academic success, but also is a great value and a huge convenience for busy families,” says Alyssia Wright, executive director of the School Nutrition Program in Fulton County Schools, in a media statement.

Of the schools included to receive grant funds, currently all students at Mimosa Elementary, McNair Middle, Paul D. West Middle, Woodland Middle, McClarin High, Creekside High, and Tri-Cities High can eat breakfast at zero cost to the student.  At Woodland Elementary, breakfast is priced at just $1.05, while at Holcomb Bridge Middle, Ridgeview Charter, Sandtown Middle and Westlake High School, breakfast is priced at $1.20. Students can enjoy a guaranteed healthy meal at an incredibly wallet-friendly price.

The American Association of School Administrators will host a Kick-Off Meeting in Atlanta for the nation’s six grantees during May 16-17. To learn more about the Fulton County School Nutrition Program, visit www.fultonschools.org/dept/schoolnutrition
