10K, 5K Races Open Sandy Springs Festival, Registration Open

The Sandy Springs Lightning 10K and 5K and the Sandy Springs Festival are major fundraisers for Heritage Sandy Springs.

 

Registration is open for the 22nd annual Doug Kessler Sandy Springs Lightning 10K and 5K.

The event is part of the Sandy Springs Festival on Sept. 22. The 10K race starts at 7:30 a.m. and the 5K race starts at 7:50 a.m.

The Lightning 10K and 5K, and the Sandy Springs Festival are major fundraisers for Heritage Sandy Springs. 

The races are a Peachtree Road Race qualifier and kicks off the two-day festival. Runners can register online or at www.active.com, www.sandyspringslightning.com or www.sandyspringsfestival.com. Registration will also take place on race day at 6:30 a.m., at the Hitson Center, at 85 Mount Vernon Highway.

The race originated as the Lightning 10K Road Race, and was later named after its founder, Doug Kessler, who died in 2005, an announcement said. Kessler named it “Lightning” for its fast route.

“A strong running community has supported the Sandy Springs Lightning 10K for over 20 years,” said Cody Elder, Race Director, in the statement.

The Sandy Springs Festival is held at Heritage Green, 6075 Sandy Springs Circle from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Sept. 22, and 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sept. 23.
