Heroes of Sandy Springs -- Police and Fire exhibit

Sandy Springs, Ga.; June 2, 2011: Opening to the public on August 7, 2011 “Heroes of Sandy Springs,” is a new exhibit in the Heritage Sandy Springs Museum that draws on historical photographs, archives, artifacts, and film clips to tell the story of policing and fire fighting in Sandy Springs. Located in the Williams-Payne House at Heritage Green, the exhibit will be on display through February 15, 2012.

The exhibit actively engages visitors in learning about the long, but little known tradition of policing and fire fighting in Sandy Springs by examining the roots of policing and fire/rescue as the Sandy Springs community developed and grew in population and ethnic diversity.

“Sandy Springs Police Department is excited to showcase our department history, as well as the history of policing in Sandy Springs by the Fulton County and Atlanta Police Departments for decades prior to the City of Sandy Springs incorporation, and most importantly the City of Sandy Springs Police Department launching on July 1, 2006,” said Officer David Johns. “This exhibit will be displayed in our Sandy Springs Police Headquarters for future generations to discover how Sandy Springs Police Department was eventually born after decades of failed attempts.”

Heroes of Sandy Springs will be located in the changing exhibit galleries of the Heritage Sandy Springs Museum. Each room will feature interpretive panels containing historic photographs and narratives and cases will display artifacts including badges, patches, equipment and other significant items. Visitors will be inspired by the stories of all volunteer groups that worked tirelessly to protect our community, and how the small volunteer forces became the world-class, professional departments that Sandy Springs has today.

“Sandy Springs Fire Rescue is pleased to be a part of the Heroes of Sandy Springs Exhibit,” said Deputy Fire Chief Dennis Ham. “Although our history has been a brief four-and-a-half years, it is important to acknowledge the hard work and sacrifice all of the men and women have made during this time, and during the time before we were incorporated. We are looking forward to honoring our heroes in this way.”

Museum hours are Wednesday and Saturday from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. and by appointment. Museum admission is $3 for adults, $1 for children ages 6-12, $1 for senior citizens 65 and older and free for Heritages Sandy Springs members and children ages 5 and under. The gift shop is open to the public free of charge. The Museum is located at 6075 Sandy Springs Circle, Sandy Springs, GA 30328. Parking is available on Sandy Springs Place in designated parking lots.
