Popular Beer Growlers Approved by City Council

Places that sell beer growlers are growing fast. Several are expected to open in Sandy Springs.

Beer growlers have been a hot topic in Sandy Springs, lately. On Tuesday, City Council members voted to amend city ordinances to permit the sale of growlers, which are jugs used to carry draft beer outside of establishments.

Some restaurants only sell beer in kegs, explained Eleanor Benson, co-owner of Moondog Growlers in Marietta, during a May City Council meeting. “[This way] you can take that to your home and quite frankly maybe be able to savor it,” she added. Moondog opens a location in Dunwoody, this week.

Benson compared the beer growling experience to wine tastings.

The amended ordinances allows stores that don’t sell liquor by the bottle, or gas, to carry growlers, if they have a malt beverage package license. As with wine tastings, beer samples will be allowed for consumers who are considering different beers to purchase. Growlers can be sold at restaurants that have a retail package license.

“There are potentially four [growler establishments] coming to the city,” said City Councilman Gabriel Sterling.

Denny Young, co-owner of The Beer Growler franchise, told that Sandy Springs, Alpharetta and Johns Creek locations will open, this summer.
