Law enforcement ran Georgia Special Olympics.
Sandy Springs Police partnered with Dunwoody Police for the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run to benefit Georgia Special Olympics, on Thursday. The four-mile run started at the site of the old Target building on Johnson Ferry Road and ended at the Publix Store, 5550 Chamblee Dunwoody Road.

Sandy Springs Police partners with Dunwoody Police, Thursday, for the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run to benefit Georgia Special Olympics. The run, which is approximately four miles, starts at 10 a.m., at Johnson Ferry Road and Sandy Springs Circle, the site of the old Target building. The run continues along Mount Vernon Highway east, crossing Roswell Road and moving into the City of Dunwoody. The run concludes at the Publix Store, 5550 Chamblee Dunwoody Road just north of Mount Vernon Highway. Staging will take place at the old Target at 9:30 a.m.

The Sandy Springs high school team made their first trip to the state finals in 19 years.
The North Springs Tennis Spartans finished no. 2 in the Georgia High School Association Tennis State Championship, on Saturday. After an exciting journey to the championship round, the Spartans lost to defending state champions, Woodward Academy, at Clayton County International Tennis Park. The Spartans were a third place AAA regional team. It has been more than 30 years since a no. 3 regional team has made it through to finish as one of Georgia's top two high school teams. It was the first trip to the state finals for North Springs’ tennis in 19 years. Carlos Alzate of Team Exergy won the Global Imports Sandy Springs Cycling Challenge, Sunday, and garnered the overall top spot for the USA Crits Speed Week series. On the women’s side, Joanne Kiesanowski withTeam TIBCO won the Cycling Challenge pro women’s race. And Erica Allar with RIDECLEAN/PatentIt.com was no. 1 among women in the Speed Week series. The Global Imports Sandy Sprrings Cycling Challenge capped nine days of intense racing in seven southeast cities beginning in Athens, Ga. and culminated in Sandy Springs. The Global Imports Cycling Challenge caps nine days of intense racing in seven southeast cities beginning in Athens, Ga. and culminating in Sandy Springs. The top men’s and women’s professional elite teams are competing for $150,000 in prizes. There's an overall individual winner of Speed Week, a team winner, and a winner of the Global Imports Cycling Challenge. The cyclists accumulated points for how they finished each race, throughout the week. Gov. Nathan Deal signed House Bill 797 at Cherokee Charter Academy in Canton, where he was awarded the 2012 Champion for Charters Award from a national charter schools group.

Jamahl Davis, 17, of Sandy Springs is the son of Shonae Jacobs, and grandson of Willette Jacobs.
Riverwood basketball player Jamahl Davis has committed to play basketball at Wingate University, in Wingate N.C. He was recruited as a point guard. At Riverwood, Jamahl was team captain, MVP, Raider Athlete of the Month, and Neighbor Athlete of the Month. He averaged 16 points, 4.5 assists and 2 steals per game, making 1st Team All-Region. “In Jamahl, Wingate is getting a true point guard and floor leader," said Riverwood Coach Buck Jenkins, in a statement. "Jamahl is a player that is as comfortable making big shots as he is creating easy opportunities for his teammates to score. Food 101 promises to have one of the largest viewing parties for this year’s Kentucky Derby. Starting at 4:30 p.m., Saturday, May 5th, the restaurant has planned a party with Derby-inspired cocktail and food specials, an announcement said. A hat contest will also be held. The winner of “Parade of Hats” will receive a wine pairing dinner for two. Other prizes will be awarded to the person who picks the winner of the Kentucky Derby.
