Riverwood Senior Mallory Hope Raises the Bar on Athletics and Academics

Student-athlete attains high scholarly marks while competing on the diamond and hardwood.

If Riverwood senior Mallory Hope’s mission was to excel as both a student and an athlete, she succeeded. After competing in basketball, softball and track during high school, Hope scored 2300 on the Scholastic Aptitude Test, which garnered her a scholarship offer from the University of Georgia. She is also being considered for the Jefferson Scholarship at the University of Virginia. The award is given to students who exemplify the highest levels of leadership, scholarship and citizenship. “I’m a competitor in everything,” Hope said. “I guess that’s what gets me through school.” This year, Hope scaled back to her favorite activities of playing softball and basketball. Epstein Boys Win Metro Atlanta Athletic Conference Title

Hoops squad avenges their lone defeat versus The Galloway School to clinch their third championship in five years

Sometimes losing can be good thing in basketball.   It’s a strange concept considering every athlete hates to lose. However, a defeat can give a coach, and his or her team, a chance to regroup. That’s what happened to Epstein Middle School boys’ basketball team after their early season loss to The Galloway School. It was Epstein’s only loss of the season. They recently returned the favor and beat Galloway 48-31 to capture the Metro Atlanta Athletic Conference championship. Epstein guard Jonathan Steinberg finished with 15 points in his school’s glorious victory. It’s Epstein’s third title in five years. They won championships in 2007 and 2009. “I’m really proud to be involved in one of the Epstein championships,” said forward Alex Platt. “…

Holy Spirit Prep Seeking First State Championship

Holy Spirit Prep is riding the leadership of senior Michael Agrippina during their recent six-game winning streak.

The Holy Spirit Prep Cougars will enter Regional play when they return from Holiday break on a hot streak. Winners of their last six and at 1-0 in the region, the Cougars believe they've built a team this season prepared to make a run at the state playoffs. Three warmup games will prepare them for a showdown in the middle of January with Mt. Vernon Presbyterian School, also 1-0 in the region and 12-0 on the season. The Cougars are 7-2 this season and are led by senior forward Michael Agrippina, known as "Aggy" by his coaches and teammates. Agrippina is building off a 1-AAA All-Region performance last season and is a major reason for the Cougars' success this year, according to Holy Spirit head coach Mike Sickafoose. No. 44 for the Cougars …

Burke Leading the Way For North Springs

North Springs High School is off to an 8-3 start and guard John Burke is a big reason for the team's early-season success.

Senior shooting guard John Burke is leading the North Springs Varsity Boys basketball team to it's best start in recent years this season. At 8-3, the Spartans are well positioned for a run at the playoffs and Burke has had the hot hand, averaging 30 points-per-game this season, including a 56-point outburst over North Paulding in November. One of the team's captains, Burke leads the way on and off the court for North Springs. "He's an extremely hard worker," Spartans head coach Ryan Koudele said recently. "He's really dedicated off the court. He works out with a personal trainer. He's constantly working on his game. He'll watch film. He's cognizant of what he's doing well and what he's not. He's really committed." Burke's dedication has …
