North Fulton cities have significantly lower unemployment rates than the rest of the state.
Sandy Springs had the second best jobless rate in Georgia at 6.5 percent, a figure that is better than all but one city and significantly better than Fulton County, metro Atlanta or Georgia's unemployment rates. It's one of three North Fulton cities with better than 7 percent unemployment, joining Alpharetta and Roswell. Only Athens joined the sub-7 percent ranks of those cities measured by the Georgia Department of Labor. And Johns Creek, the other North Fulton city, was only slightly behind at 7 percent. Sandy Springs had 57,912 residents counted in the labor force in January, and 3,768 were counted as unemployed. Since Alpharetta's daytime population is almost double the number of people who live in the city, it's not really a surprise that the city had the lowest unemployment rate for October of any municipality in Georgia at 6.1 percent. That doesn't make the 1,926 city residents who were unemployed last month happy. The Georgia Department of Labor released labor force data today, and other North Fulton cities fared relatively well also. Roswell's 6.4 percent jobless rate was second out of the cities of 25,000 people or more that the department measures. Sandy Springs is just a tick away at 6.5 percent. Johns Creek had the highest rate in North Fulton at 7 percent, a drop of one-tenth, though that was far below East Point's 12.4 percent jobless …
