These Thanksgiving crafts will lend festive fun to your Sandy Springs holiday decor.

Before the turkey is in the oven, the dining room table is set and your family is on their way, making Thanksgiving and fall crafts is a fun way to pass the time. Thanksgiving crafts will keep little hands busy and provide family-friendly fall decor to your home. Try any of these craft instructions to add fun to your Thanksgiving table. OREO TURKEY WHAT YOU NEED: 2 Oreo cookies 1 miniature Reeses Peanut Butter Cup 6 candy corns 1 Whopper Yellow, red and black small tubes of frosting 1 container chocolate frosting (optional) WHAT YOU DO: 1. Recipes for Your Halloween Pumpkins

What to do with the multitude of pumpkins rolling around Sandy Springs? Make pumpkin french toast, pumpkin pie crunch and pumpkin coffee cake.

Pumpkin recipes are the perfect transition into the holiday season.  Baked pumpkin French toast, using whole grain bread, is a company pleaser for your overnight guests. Assemble it the night before, and when morning arrives, it goes straight from the refrigerator into the oven. It will cause “ohhhs and ahhhs” from your guests when served with warm real maple syrup. By far my favorite pumpkin recipe is Carolyn Hensley’s Pumpkin Pie Crunch. It is very easy to make, and is so much better than a pumpkin pie! Have your recipe handy because people will be asking you for this recipe. Baked Pumpkin French Toast 8 cups (1-inch) whole wheat bread cubes 7 large eggs 3 1/2 cups milk 1 1/2 tsp. vanilla extract 1 tsp. ground ginger 2 tsp. ground …

Why settle for a store-bought pumpkin pie when you can use a cast iron skillet to make a monster pumpkin pie that blows a pre-made pie out of the water: http://www.modemac.com/wiki/Cast_Iron_Pumpkin_Pie   more ›

When Do You Take Down the Christmas Tree?

Take our Sandy Springs Patch poll.

The holiday season seems to be flying by. How soon do you take down your tree?  Some folks have been known to dismantle their tree on Dec. 26. Others wait until the Epiphany on Jan. 6, which celebrates the visit of the three kings to the baby Jesus. Take our poll. Tell us when you take down your tree.

Does Your Family Celebrate on Christmas Eve or Christmas Day?

Take our Sandy Springs Patch poll.

Many family traditions start on Christmas Eve with family gatherings, dinner and exchanging gifts. By late Christmas morning, they consider the holiday over and are focused on the next day’s activities and shopping sales. Which day do you celebrate on? Tell us in the poll below.

View From a Cop: Assembling Toys in the Wee Hours of Christmas Morning

Sandy Springs Police Lt. Steve Rose remembers Christmas past.

Hello and Merry Christmas [or insert your politically correct name for what we used to refer to as Christmas.] The important thing to remember during the holiday season is this: Shelve the attitude and enjoy the season. We can get back to the dismal reality of life in January but for now, especially if you have young kids, take a time out and make it good for them. My kids are grown, at least in years. The youngest is in college so although shopping is easier [cash and gift cards], the ‘Christmas Morning’ thrill is gone. Our Christmas Day now starts about 10 a.m. and even then we have to wake them up. Although I miss their surprised faces, the sleepless night before, their shrieking voices at 5 a.m. ready to open gifts - I don’t miss …

Thought of this column as I was assembling a baby doll bed Christmas Eve/ Christmas morning (toy Made in China, of course) at 1a.m. with brandy egg nog in hand and the Vatican Mass on tv. Even cursed the Yugoslavians, just because. I apologize now to those folks. The instructions were just about fine aside from the two screws that had to be replaced. (WHY would you assemble a wooden bed with …   more ›

Coping With Grief During Holidays

It's not the season of joy for everyone. It's a difficult time for Sandy Springs families who have lost loved ones.

For people mourning the death of a loved one, holidays can bring renewed or intensified grief, casting a pall on what once might have been a favorite time of year. The sense of loss can be particularly acute on the first Thanksgiving, Hanukkah or Christmas with an empty place at the table. Grief's intense emotional toll also has health implications, marked by elevated stress hormones, diminished immune response, insomnia and increased susceptibility to illness. People struggling with grief need extra support to get through the weeks between Thanksgiving and the new year. However, strategies for coping with grief during the holidays vary according to people’s needs, said Dr. D. Keith Cobb, who practices internal medicine outside of …
