Head of Sandy Springs Mission Recieves Humanitaran Award

On Monday, Felix Lora, executive director of the Sandy Springs Mission received the 2013 Humanitarian Award honoring the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

  Felix Lora, executive director of the Sandy Springs Mission, received the 2013 Humanitarian Award during the annual Sandy Springs celebration honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The event was held Monday in the Council Chamber at City Hall. The Sandy Springs Mission is an afterschool program for at-risk students held at Mount Vernon Baptist Church and the Church of the Atonement. It was started by Mount Vernon Baptist Church in 1999, providing food and clothing assistance to many Latino residents in need. Lora brought an education focus to the program when he was hired in 2001. In addition to motivating students to stay in school through adversity and go to college, Lora picks up more than 100 students for the afternoon program from …

The 2013 Humanitarian Award will be presented honoring an individual who has shown outstanding commitment to community service. Spalding Charter Elementary School choir students and Michael Night, the “New York Cowboy” will perform in the City Hall event.

  The City of Sandy Springs will host a community celebration to honor the legacy of the late Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. at 10 a.m., Monday, in the Sandy Springs City Hall Council Chamber. During the celebration event, the 2013 Humanitarian Award will be presented honoring an individual who has shown outstanding commitment to community service in Sandy Springs. “As we take this day to reflect on the values and charge led by Reverend King, it is appropriate that we recognize someone in the community who actively demonstrates that philosophy,” said Sandy Springs Mayor Eva Galambos. Sandy Springs Recycling Center Provides Free Document Shredding, Monday

Documents will be shredded on site to protect privacy and identity.

  Free document shredding will be offered at two North Fulton locations over the next two weeks.  On Monday, the Sandy Springs Recycling Center will shred documents on site from 9 a.m.-1 p.m. The center is located at 460 Morgan Falls Road. On Feb. 2, free document shredding will be offered at Panera Bread Company at 11715 Medlock Bridge Road in Johns Creek. All shredded paper will be recycled. Although the events are free donations are welcome.

Fulton County Pep Rally for Atlanta Falcons Game

Fulton County will hold a pep rally for the team on Friday, Jan. 18 at noon.

  Calling all home team fans: cheer on the Atlanta Falcons before the big game against the San Francisco 49ers this weekend. Fulton County is celebrating its hometown team with a pep rally honoring the Falcons as they prepare for Sunday’s NFC Playoff game against the 49ers. Local residents are encouraged to “Rise Up” and show their support of Atlanta's team by wearing the team colors of red and black. Former Atlanta Falcon Terance Mathis, the Falcons cheerleaders and several special guest surprises will be on hand at the Fulton County Government Center Atrium, 141 Pryor Street, SW in Atlanta on Friday, Jan. 18 at noon.

Job Fair: Northside Hospital Wants to Fill 500 Positions

The event will be held next week in Sandy Springs.

  Next week, Northside Hospital will hold a job fair to fill more than 500 positions.  The event will be held 11 a.m.-3 p.m., Wednesday, at 5601 Peachtree Dunwoody Road, the former Marriott Courtyard. The site is across the street from Northside Hospital. Northside seeks candidates for new and existing positions. Nursing, allied health and support professionals are needed, a press statement said. Study: MARTA Generates Jobs and $2.6 Billion in Economic Activity Yearly

Commuters take MARTA to their Sandy Springs jobs daily.

  A new study released by the University of Georgia’s Carl Vinson Institute estimated that MARTA is responsible for about $2.6 billion in economic activity every year and supports roughly 24,000 jobs – not  only in the metro Atlanta region it serves – but statewide, a press statement said. The 94-page study, “The Economic Impact of Metropolitan Atlanta Rapid Transit Authority on the Economy and Labor Mobility of the Region,” analyzed MARTA’s direct and indirect effects on the economy from 2007 to 2011 based on its operating and capital budgets, according to the transit system. Act3 Winter Classes Start Next Week for Kindergarten Through High School Grades

The Sandy Springs playhouse is offering improv, musical theater and more starting Jan. 14. Award-winning choreographer Johanna Mitchell is one of the instructors.

  Instructor: Johnna Mitchell Dates: Mondays, 5:30 – 7 p.m., Jan. 14-March 25 (No class Jan. 21) Ages: Middle school through high school Fee:  $185 (Students do not need to have completed Session I in order to participate.) This high-energy dance class will help prepare participants for dance auditions and performances on the musical theater stage, as well as build confidence and general stage presence.
