Johnson Ferry Road Work to Continue Through 2012

Abernathy and Johnson Ferry Road construction won't be done in June, as first planned by GDOT; new park will enhance Abernathy Road.

Motorists will have to wait an extra year and a half for the completion of roadwork on Johnson Ferry Road. Georgia Department of Transportation spokesman Mark McKinnon said, the earlier June 2011 deadline was misleading and did not take into account the 12-16 months needed to relocate utilities.  “People don’t realize what a really big deal it is,” he said. Upgrading the road involves more than widening the road and installing bike lanes, sidewalks, a raised median and emergency lanes. Before work could begin, utilities such as telephone polls had to be relocated. That means that all the carriers using the polls, such as cable TV providers, also had to relocate their wires. 6:15 monday afternoon traffic is backed up north bound from abernathy road to the river. when will this road construction be finished? they only work on this project 2 to 3 days a week. also why do we have a 4 way stop on johnson ferry road between sandy springs circle and abernathy road? a yield sign would be much better and would not be back up from the stop sign pass sandy springs circle. Hammond Drive interchange at Ga. 400 to open next summer

The project has been discussed for years; still has its critics

One of the worst traffic gridlocks in Perimeter Center should be eased when a new interchange with Ga. 400 opens next summer. Aug. 31 is the planned opening date of a ballyhooed $17.1 million interchange at Hammond Drive and Ga. 400. It will provide drivers with a third route to northbound Ga. 400. The current two routes involve plodding 1.5 miles north of I-285 to get on via Abernathy Road, or fighting across I-285. The new interchange has a lot of history. And it's still controversial. For starters, it's been talked about for 15 years. A few years ago, area residents cited the failure to build it as an example of negligent leadership of Fulton and DeKalb counties.
