Holy Spirit Prep Has a Popular Secret Santa Store

The Sandy Springs school's annual holiday event has a surprisingly popular gift item.

From Holy Spirit Prep For years, lower school students at Holy Sprit Prep have arrived home early in December with hand decorated shopping bags filled with wrapped gifts for parents, grandparents and siblings.  They are usually some of the first presents to be placed under the family tree. Students anticipate the moment when Mom, Dad, brother, sister, grandma or grandpa, unwraps their personally selected gift from the school's Secret Santa store. But where in the world do all these gifts come from? Usually, in early July, HSP’s favorite elf, Stephanie McCarty, scurries up and down the massive hallways of the Gift Mart selecting the inventory of over 3,000 items for the Secret Santa shop.  Six years ago, when her son, Ben, was in first …

Red and Black Board Apologizes; Student Staff Might Return

"We felt like we were being walked on so we walked out," said Editor in Chief Polina Marinova.

An advertising executive has resigned from The Red & Black board of directors. Students will have more input into editorial decisions. And there won't be a non-student review of stories prior to their being published. With all three of their demands met, the former staff of The Red & Black student newspaper may return to their jobs, said editor-in-chief Polina Marinova. Marinova and her staff walked out Wednesday night, fed up with what they believed was too much interference and emphasis on happy, upbeat stories instead of real news about the UGA community. "We'll talk among ourselves and then reapply for our positions," said Marinova. "We're happy they met our demands and that we finally had a voice." The Board of Directors will hire a…

Advocacy Group Speaks Out on Challenges in Georgia Public Education

Advocacy group is composed of educators, parents, students and community members focused on improving public education throughout Georgia, including Sandy Springs.

Matt Jones is a public school teacher from Vidalia, Georgia. He is a co-founder of EmpowerED Georgia. He spoke with Athens Patch recently about his organization and some of the challenges facing public education in Georgia today. What is EmpowerED Georgia? An education advocacy group. It’s made up of 3,500 students, parents, educators and concerned citizens across the state. What does it do? Three things. Inform—we saw there was a big gap in education coverage in the media. These are in-depth issues, and we didn’t see that coverage happening anywhere else. So we decided to do it. We want to give people as much …

Holy Innocent's Student Wins Miss USA National Junior Contest.

Rising Sandy Springs sophomore Ansley McGhee is often seen on a pitcher’s mound – striking out batter after batter both as the Holy Innocents’ starting pitcher and on her travel squad. This summer, however, she took her success to the national level – and in a pageant gown, not a softball uniform. Ansley was named Miss USA National Junior Teen July 1st after earning the crown over some 25 contestants. Participants compete for scholarships and other prizes in the contest. It wasn’t Ansley's first brush with national success: She placed in the top five at the Miss Georgia Peach Jr. Teen American Coed last year as well as fifth at the Miss Southern States Jr. Teen for USA National. Her crown earlier this month was her first national title. …
