Hearth Oven Pizza is Melting the Hearts of Patrons

The pizza tavern is one of the busiest restaurants in Sandy Springs.

If you’re pizza lover, and you haven’t been to Hearth Pizza Tavern, you should visit the popular restaurant in the Whole Foods shopping center on Roswell Road. That is, if you can get in. On many nights there’s a slight wait. It's one of the busiest restaurants in Sandy Springs. Before Hearth opened in October 2008, the owners learned through focus groups that people were not interested in fast casual Italian food. “It cannot be cheap,” co-owner Dave Pazienza recalled. “Good Italian is not fast food. It has to [have] a full service bar – liquor, beer and wine.” That’s Hearth. Good Pizza, good atmosphere, with a full service staff and bar. “We wanted everything homemade from crust, sauces, French fries, dressing, even pickles are homemade…

Food 101 Brings Variety of Changes Into the New Year

The Sandy Springs eatery has had a makeover.

From Debbie Rosen Evolution has been the name of the culinary game at Food 101, since it opened its doors 13 years ago. The owners recently decided that it was time for the restaurant to better reflect the bold cuisine the kitchen was serving and embarked on a design transformation. Between the welcoming new décor, the newly minted Barrel Bar and all of its offerings and the bold flavors that the new menu offers, Food 101 has brimmed with excitement this holiday season.           From the moment guests enter the restaurant, they are now greeted with a retro American look that evokes a feeling of relaxed Southern charm. Each of the table tops in the dining room has been replaced with light, weathered butcher block providing a more casual …

Causes of Low Restaurant Health Inspection Scores

Some Sandy Springs restaurant violations that health inspectors observe can cause scores to drop dramatically, such as a wet rag near food.

An 80s or Grade B health inspection score is sort or a medium grade.  Fulton County health inspections rate as follows: A is a score of 90-100; B is 80-89; C is 70-79; an U is 69 or less. Some violation that health inspectors observe can cause scores to drop dramatically, such as  a wet rag near food. Here are some violations from recent health inspections: 5 Seasons Brewing received an 87 on its recent health inspection. Violations included mold inside the ice machine; black specs on ice cubes at the bar; and food and sauces not cooling properly. Tacos and Tequilas received a 65 on a recent health inspection. The inspector observed a kitchen sink with a broom and bottle inside; hot water was not operable; grease was observed on inside …

Is Sandy Springs the New Hub for Ethnic Eateries?

What's your favorite ethnic restarurant in Sandy Springs? We spotlight three on Roswell Road within a mile of I-285.

Rumi's Kitchen may be the most popular restaurant in Sandy Springs. The Persian restaurant has a constant stream of patrons almost nightly. It's one of several ethnic eateries in the city. Some of the busiest are on Roswell Road within a mile of I-285, we've spotlighted three.  Rumi's recently moved a short distance from it's original location to 6112 Roswell Road. Light dishes include the Rumi’s Dip (chickpea hummus), Dolmeh (hand-rolled grape leaves stuffed with ground beef, rice and herbs), Mirza Ghasemi (smoked eggplant in tomatoes and garlic) and fresh salads topped with a charbroiled chicken breast marinated in lemon saffron sauce or roasted salmon. Ariana Afghan Cuisine is located at 5785 Roswell Road, a stone's throw away from …

Despite Complaint City Affirms Decision on Sandy Springs Tennis Center Contract

Bruce Brown attorney for losing bidder Operation Tennis believes his company did not receive fair treatment in the request for proposals process.

Groslimond Tennis Services, Inc. will take over management of the City of Sandy Springs tennis center as part of its one-year task order beginning Jan. 1, 2013, a Friday statement said. The City confirmed its decision following allegations from Operation Tennis, Inc., one of the losing bidders for the contract. Bruce Brown, attorney for Operation Tennis, told Patch that his client didn’t get a fair shake. Each party in the request for proposals process had to provide a reference. Brown complained that Groslimond’s reference had a direct relationship to the company. However, a letter from city attorney Wendall Willard to Brown says, “…There is no requirement in the RFP that the person completing the Past Performance Questionnaire be an ‘…

Yes--this is obviously a case of a city government being more cost conscious than a county government can be :) Not! Are they "government closer to the people" or "closer to the connected"? Regarding tennis centers, besides having a more idyllic name (I've always appreciated the soap operish "Sandy anything"), I haven't seen much of a difference in the facility now than when it was with the …   more ›

Residents: Zoning Request Leaves Neighborhoods Exposed to Commerical Intrusion

Sandy Springs residents are discouraged by the City Council's decision to delay a vote on a zoning request to create a driveway at Glenridge Medical Center onto Glenforest Road.

The question of whether neighborhoods are protected from commercial intrusion arose during Tuesday’s City Council meeting. “We have repeatedly promised people in residential areas that we are not going to go ahead and decrease their quality of life,” said Councilman Tibby DeJulio. “We have neighborhoods all over Sandy Springs that could wind up having commercial intrusion.” Residents booed as they left what was a packed City Council Chamber after Mayor Eva Galambos voted to defer a rezoning decision on a new driveway at Glenridge Medical Center onto Glenforest Road. The building is located at 5730 Glenridge Road and current zoning conditions do not allow for the driveway. The Mayor cast the deciding vote when the six Council members were…

It's nice to see that others who live in the southern part of Sandy Springs (i.e., the older part) realize the bias that exists against us. The City's elected officials would in large part simply like to see our homes bulldozed. When nearly every tree was razed on the former Crawford & Co property, Mayor Galambos indicated that this was necessary because the building was outdated and no longer …   more ›
