Cloud 9 Owner: 'Cupcake Wars' was High Anxiety Fun, Would do it Again

On Sunday night, Mike Pettenato, co-owner of Cloud 9 Cupcakes, gathered with about 50 friends and family members at Firebird sports bar, nearby Sandy Springs, to view his appearance on the Food Network show.

Mike Pettenato compares his appearance on “Cupcake Wars” to “The Hunger Games,” but it was still a dream come true, he said.  “It’s really exciting,” said Pettenato, co-owner of Cloud 9 Cupcakes. “When we got into cupcakes three years ago, my dream was to be on the show.” Customers always encouraged him to apply too, he added.  On Sunday night, Pettenato gathered with about 50 friends and family members at Firebird sports bar in Dunwoody, to view his appearance on the Food Network show. He lost to Cake That! owner Jess Bartlett from Manahawkin, NJ, who advanced to the final round. Bartlett lost to San Diego-based cupcake shop, Pure Cupcakes. The show was recorded in August. Moderna Restaurant Brings New Energy to Sandy Springs

Located just before Roswell, the city’s newest taqueria sets itself apart in atmosphere and cuisine from the sports bars and taverns in the area.

Sandy Springs may be officially hip with the new restaurant, Moderna. The city’s newest taqueria place sets itself apart in atmosphere and cuisine from the sports bars and taverns in the area. It's located just before the stretch into downtown Roswell at 8540 Roswell Road. “We want to offer a brand new experience in redefining what a Sandy Springs restaurant and bar is,” said co-owner Josh Ahlzadeh. Moderna celebrated its grand opening last Friday. Moderna is comparable to Three Sheets, at City Walk shpping center, in atmosphere and vibe. It’s more restaurant than club, although the establishment holds parties for special events. Ahlzadeh and co-owner Paul Yuwachit say folks nearby believe they have to go to Roswell, Buckhead or …

Restaurant Theft Shows Used Cooking Oil Becoming a Hot Commodity

The owner of popular Makara Mediterranean in Sandy Springs discovered a woman pumping used grease from a container at the back of his restaurant.

Something other than Greek delicacies are a hot commodity at Ertan Makara's Roswell Road restaurant. Last week, the owner of popular Makara Mediterranenan discovered a woman pumping used grease from a container into a white box truck at the back of his restaurant. The woman said she had a work order to pump it but could not produce any documents. Sandy Springs Police say two women were involved in the incident. One of the women acted as a decoy inside the restaurant, according to Capt. Steve Rose. The women escaped in the truck. The stolen grease is said to be valued at $100. Information from Rose says the used grease can yield 30 to 40 cents per pound. Bigger rendering companies will turn leftover grease into animal feed, cosmetics, …

'That Pie Place' Appears to Have the Right Ingredients

The Sandy Springs restaurant is located across from Costco and opens today. Owner Ron Wolf said he stumbled on the location but welcomes its perks. The eatery features a variety of pocket pies for breakfast, lunch and dinner.

Ron Wolf has found a perfect location for his new Perimeter area restaurant, That Pie Place; and perhaps an ideal concept in pie pockets that appeals to both health-conscious and hearty eaters. “The real challenge we have is people think it’s a pizza place or a dessert place,” Wolf said. That Pie Place opens for business, Friday, at 6355 Peachtree Dunwoody Road, in Sandy Springs. Located across the street from Costco, the restaurant is easily seen sitting catty-corner at the bottom of Park Place Apartments.   The restaurant features a variety of pies for breakfast, lunch and dinner. There’s Salmon Coulibiac pie, with black pepper salmon, rice pilaf, white garlic cheese sauce, sautéed mushrooms, feta cheese and spinach. There’s Chiplote …

Weapons Debate Draws Gun Enthusiasts and Buyers to Local Range

Business at the Sandy Springs Gun Club and Range has been non-stop, a manager said. "Everyone is buying everything."

The gun debate and fears over a ban on certain weapons has stretched to nearly every corner of the country including Sandy Springs. Local gun enthusiasts have been clued into the debate since before the Presidential election in November, according to Meg Hinton, manager of the Sandy Springs Gun Club and Range. As a result, it’s been increasingly busy at the gun club.  “Everyone is buying everything,” said Hinton. “We are running out of ammunition and guns; people are coming into shoot, it has been non-stop. After the Newtown [shootings] that’s when everything disappeared because everyone was convinced the AR15 would disappear” Some folks are also interested in weapons that have higher capacity magazines. Instead of a magazine that has 10…

And finally, what's worse is that so many people do not realize that the 2nd amendment strictly intended for the populace to be armed, to keep the government in check. It isn't about hunting. Now you may say, the founders never imagined AR15's. Well, they never imagined the internet either, but we still have the 1st Amendment. It's just downright pathetic that people do not know that the …   more ›
